Create Your Own Treasure Map (Make a Treasure Map for Kids!) Students LOVE this fun & engaging way to practice cardinal and intermediate directions with a Treasure Map and/or Treasure Hunt for kids! You can use the Treasure Hunt and Treasure Map drawing activities separately or together, both have accompanying grading rubrics. This cardinal and intermediate directions worksheet is a great way to teach cardinal and intermediate directions to 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th or even 5th grade students.

Also included in this resource is a full and quarter-page Compass Rose poster for wall display or student reference.

Make Your Own Treasure Hunt:

Students work alone or in groups to pick a small object to hide in the classroom. First, they must choose their starting point and then work together to design the treasure hunt. I have found it helpful to check each groups’ directions for accuracy before sending other students to hunt!

Example directions:

  • Start at the classroom door.
  • Then, take 1 small step South.
  • Next, 5 hops Northeast.
  • After that, turn and face West and take 1 large lunge.

Draw a Treasure Map:

Have students draw a map of the classroom, school, or other familiar location. Then, they can draw in a path to treasure where X marks the spot!
